Have you burnt your bridges?
A friend of mine recently left his hi-flutin job to start a consultancy (Software and IT services) in Pune. Reproduced below is a conversation he recently had with a prospective client.
Friend: Why won’t you give us the contract?
Client: Tell me, what will you do if your consultancy does not work out for you?
Friend: I’ll probably go get a programming position (here in Pune).
Client (with a smirk): See, that’s exactly why I won’t give you the contract – I want to work with someone who will be on the street if he does not do well. That will give me assurance that he won’t dump my annual contract and walk away when I need him the most.
